Ephraim & Palesa
Soft spoken Ephraim and the charismatic Palesa are long time sweethearts who have decided to make it official and tie the knot at their home in Kagiso
Botho and Zamo, just like many couples who got together during the pandemic, they faced many challenges of loss, retrenchment just to name a few. But through their love they perservered and now find themselves celebrating their love and union in the most diverse and simplified zulu & setswana cultural wedding.
The day started off with custom of Patlo. Patlo is one of the wedding traditions of the Tswana that is still practiced today. This would normally take place before the sun rises, when the magadi (lobola) negotiations process begins. A delegation from Zamo’s side arrived at Botho’s family to ask for the young lady’s hand in marriage.
Zamo’s family was expected to appease the Botho’s family with a variety of gifts. They were also expected to display courtesy and humility towards Botho’s family through the negotiation process.
The actual wedding ceremony, referred to as lenyalo, would take place at both homesteads. Botho & Zamo opted to go the Stone Cliff venue for the reception and speeches. This was a very unique merging of two different cultures as Zamo is from a Zulu background and Botho is Tswana. Hence there was a bit of language barrier, especially from the bride’s family. But nonetheless, the sentiments expressed was more than enough to surpass the misunderstandings between the zulu and tswana languages.
